Disk defragmentation and security… yeah right!

by Alain Fontaine on Feb.26, 2009, under Technology

Today is not the first time that I received a ZDNet newsletter with the following “sponsored content” in it :

Disk defragmentation and security?

The ad basically says that you can enhance your security by buying a disk defragmentation software, because it would allow your antivirus (and other security software) to analyse and globally run faster.

I personally think this is bullshit and invite anyone to prove I’m wrong, by facts. I could also say: Don’t defragment your disk, because the slower it goes, the longer it will take the virus to spread all over your files. Right? Yeah right! :-)

Personally, given the number of ad networks that have been compromised by malware vendors, I think reading content with ads in it presents a more significant threat to your PC than a badly fragmented disk drive.
